The ageless beauty of K Road Cliffs

Australia is an ancient land. And the best thing is, you don’t have to travel far to find evidence of millennia past. One such window into the ages lies not far from Tarneit at the K Road Cliffs, overlooking the beginning of the estuary of the Werribee River.

The K Road Cliffs have clearly exerted a particular magic across vast reaches of time. For the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land, ‘Werribee’ meant ‘backbone’ and it’s easy to see why – the region would have provided an ample supply of fresh water fish and tucker, not to mention kangaroos and wallaby.

Over countless seasons, the river has worn away the Werribee delta, creating these extraordinary cliffs over the river revealing the geological past of the region in exquisite detail. Basalt rocks from a former volcanic age, quartz and limestone are all present, creating a marvel of colour when the light falls just so as the sun moves across the sky.

And, in the distance, the peaked outline of the You Yangs rises, adding to the drama of the land.

For the adventurous, K Road Cliffs is an ideal spot to strike out on the paths, try out some kayaking or take up the rod for a spot of fishing. Wildlife abounds, with spoonbills, reed warblers and more for the bird watchers... but watch out for snakes in the warmer months!

You’ll find the K Road Cliffs from K Road Werribee. Head right at the bottom of the stairs for your best view of the cliffs, take a packed lunch to sit and enjoy the view with, and savour the feeling of living in such a beautiful part of the world!
